The conflict over renaming welfare schemes in Andhra Pradesh

Almost all the schemes implemented by the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) government in Andhra Pradesh were named after its founder, former Chief Minister Late N Taraka Rama Rao (NTR). The new ones being launched by the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government carry the name of another former chief minister Late YS Rajasekhar Reddy (YSR).

The YSRCP government led by YS Jagan Mohan Reddy besides conducting an inquiry into projects launched by TDP government, the YSRCP government is also renaming few welfare schemes. At the very first cabinet meeting in June, ‘NTR Vaidya Seva,’ a free health care scheme for the poor, was renamed as, ‘YSR Arogyasri.’ It also renamed social security pension scheme ‘NTR Bharosa’ as ‘YSR Pension Kanuka.’

‘Badi Pilustondi’ a scheme by TDP for children’s enrollment in government schools has been renamed as ‘Rajanna Badi Bata.’ The TDP government had last year opened over 200 ‘Anna Canteens,’ providing meals to the poor for just Rs 5 and the YSRCP is reportedly in plans to re-launch these canteens, however with a new name, ‘Rajanna Canteens.’ NTR and YSR were affectionately called by many as Anna and Rajanna, respectively.
