'Stop Polavaram immediately' Naveen Patnaik writes to Modi

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi asking for his intervention on the Polavaram project in Andhra Pradesh. Patnaik requested Modi to take appropriate measures to ensure that all the work related to project stops with immediate effect till all the conflicts between the Andhra and Odisha are resolved.

"If the project is allowed to be completed before the resolution of all the pending issues, it will cause permanent injury to the interest of the state of Odisha and its people," wrote Patnaik in the letter. The letter comes in right after Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change kept the' stop work order' in abeyance for a period of 2 years disregarding Odisha's appeal against the move.

For a long time Naveen has been demanding both central and Andhra Pradesh governments to stop the works as the construction of the project will result in flooding of fertile lands, mass displacement of tribals and submergence of large forest cover in Odisha . According to Naveen, Odisha would be the most impacted state if the Polavaram project is constructed without resolving of the environmental, displacement and land submergence issues.

"I would like to reiterate that if the construction work on the Polavaram Project is not stopped forthwith, it will have immense adverse impact on the people living in the tribal district of Malkangiri in Odisha," he added in the letter.

Naveen suggested that the dispute can be resolved of the project is reformulated as per the Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal (GWDT) without causing any submergence in the neighbouring states of Telangana, Chattisgarh and Odisha. A final resolution on the dispute is pending before the Supreme Court.
