Prashant Kishore; the man with the Midas touch in Indian elections, has turned almost every political entity that he has touched into gold. He has proved his mastery again by propelling the YSR Congress of YS Jagan Mohan Reddy to power with an overwhelming majority and handing over a shocking defeat to technocrat type politician N Chandrababu Naidu.
Jagan's party has won 22 of 25 Lok Sabha seats and 151 out of 175 assembly segments in the polls.
His father YS Rajasekhara Reddy fondly known as YSR by his fans, was the Andhra Pradesh CM when he died in a plane crash in 2009. The Congress chose to ignore Jagan Mohan's claim to YSR's legacy leading to his exit from the party. However, he failed to win power in the 2014 election in Andhra Pradesh.
Jagan Mohan's YSR Congress had lost the 2014 assembly election primarily due to lack of organisational strength as it had polled 45.4 per cent votes for 66 seats against TDP-BJP-Janasena alliance's 48.2 per cent votes for 103 seats.
Five years later, Prashant Kishore and his India Political Action Committee team identified this weakness and helped Jagan Mohan build an organisation right from the booth level structures.
BJP president Amit Shah too follows the same strategy of building booth-level committees in each of the constituencies.
Jagan Mohan sought his consultancy at a time when Prashant Kishore was practically a leader-without-work in the Janata Dal-United of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, an ally of the BJP. The two came together in 2017.
Prashant Kishore was famous when he helped Narendra Modi win 2012 Gujarat assembly election and become chief minister for the third time beating anti-incumbency. He entered Andhra Pradesh election campaign with the stunning victory of Narendra Modi-powered BJP in 2014 Lok Sabha election, He worked for JD(U)-RJD alliance that routed BJP in Bihar state polls in 2015. He worked for Congress which returned to power in Punjab.
How did he do it in Andhra Pradesh?
Prashant Kishore and his team planned an outreach programme for Jagan's party to establish a direct connection with the voters in Andhra Pradesh. Jagan's 15-month Praja Sankalpa Padayatra has been planned to achieve this goal. The YSR Congress released a campaign song too, 'Raavali Jagan Kaavali Jagan' (we want Jagan, Jagan should win). The song turned out to be the most watched election theme song.
The team also used people friendly slogans. These slogans had set a narrative in favour of Jagan. The narrative that favoured Jagan helped his party to cash in on the anti-incumbency against the TDP government.
The catchy slogans include; 'Ninnu nammam babu' (We don't trust you babu), 'bye bye babu'.
By the time the TDP's slogan; "malli nuvve raavali", came out, Jagan's slogans went into the mind of the people.
On the D-day of counting, Fan (the election symbol of the YSRCP) blew away the Cycle (election symbol of TDP).
