Witty, orator par excellence, outstanding parliamentarian, gentleman and man with a lion's heart, these were some of the words that Jaipal Reddy's colleagues used to express their admiration for the 5 time MP and 4 times MLA.
As a Union Minister, Jaipal Reddy handled ministries such as Information and Broadcasting, Oil, Earth Sciences and Science and Technology efficiently and was the first MP south India and also the youngest to win the Outstanding Parliamentarian award in 1998.
He started his political career as a student leader of Osmania University and became a Congress MLA in the 1970s. During the emergency in 1975, he quit Congress and joined the Janata Party as a mark of protest. Reddy even contested against Indira Gandhi from Medak in 1980. Although he lost the elections, he was successful in making a bold statement and was lauded for his courage. An excellent orator, Reddy's speeches and press briefings have a separate fan base. His wit and ability to face the most adverse situations with a smile made him a natural choice for the party spokesperson for Janata Party and National front.
It's only because of his wisdom and hold over policymaking that President Ramnath Kovind remembered him as a "thinking man's politician" while former PM Dr. Manmohan Singh referred to him as a "treasure of wisdom and knowledge". Reddy's death is a huge loss not just to the Telugu states but national politics as well.
