Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jaganmohan Reddy has done something that has never been done before in Indian politics. At a legislative party meeting held in YSRCP's party office, Jagan appointed a total of 5 Deputy Chief Minister for his cabinet.
The 5 Deputy Chief Ministers are from SC, ST, Backward Classes, Minority, and Kapu community. This unprecedented move is being seen as an appeasement measure by Jagan. However, the party sources claim that this is to ensure adequate representation for all the communities and their social justice- a promise that Jagan made during his 'Padayatras'.
The SC, ST, BC, and Minority all belong to marginalised sections and the Deputy CM from Kapu community is being seen as a measure to consolidate his stronghold in the Godavari districts along with Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram districts where this forward community is present in large numbers and gave Jagan a thumping majority in the recently concluded AP assembly elections.
What's interesting here is that the previous Chandrababu Naidu's government had passed a resolution of providing 5% reservation quota for the Kapus. Jagan on the other hand straightaway stated that the reservation is a tricky issue and there is not much that he could do about it. "Some subjects are in the state government’s purview and some are not. Reservations is one subject that the state government is not concerned with. As I do not promise what I cannot do, I will not promise reservations", said Jagan famously during his campaign.
The faith of Kapu community in Jagan despite him straightaway expressing helplessness on the reservation matter is what propelled him to induct a Kapu Deputy CM along with hiking Kapu corporation budget to Rs 10,000 crores from existing RS 5,000 crores.
Meanwhile, a large section of political analysts have slammed this move from Jagan calling it cheap move for appeasement. "This is cheap political populism. How can there be five Deputy CMs? This is highly obnoxious," said Prof. K Nageshwar
