Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jaganmohan Reddy met Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday demanding Special Category Status to Andhra Pradesh among other demands for the state. Jagan also demanded the centre to fulfil provisions under AP Reorganisation Act, 2014, along with clearing pending funds towards the state.
The YSRCP chief asked Shah to direct the finance department to clear funds for Andhra Pradesh to the extent of Rs 18,969.26 to fill in for the state's revenue deficit. Andhra Pradesh is reeling under a severe budget deficit, a sentiment that was echoed by NITI Aayog Vice - Chairman Rajiv Kumar who had visited the state earlier this month.
"We did not change the quantum of the budget but have changed the priorities and our priority areas are education, medicare and inclusive growth. As the state revenues, central devolution and fiscal deficit cannot be increased or changed, it is only the Central grant that we can expect to be more liberal," said an official press release from the Chief Minister's office.
Among other demands, Jagan also seeked funds for the Ramayapatnam Pork, Visakhapatnam- Chennai industrial corridor, and Kadap steel plant which were promised during the bifurcation in 2014. The Chief Minister also seeked an assistance for seven backward districts of the state, since only Rs 1,050 crore of the total allocation of Rs 2,100 crore has been released by the Centre so far.
Interestingly, Jagan was supposed to meet the Union Home Minister Amit Shah earlier on Monday. However, due to Shah's busy schedule, the AP Chief Minister was denied an appointment.
