Just as the state is recovering from the shock of the Devipatnam boat accident which took 35 lives last month, another major road accident took place on the Maredumilli- Chinturu ghat road in East Godavari. The tempo traveller fell into a gorge after it lost control and veered off the road taking 7 lives.
The victims were tourists - 10 of them from Karnataka and two from Anantapur. According to the police, the tempo was travelling from Bhadrachalam to Annavaram.
"Seven of them are dead; two are critical, while the other three suffered minor injuries," said SP SV Sridhara Rao speaking to the media.
"We are yet to determine what caused the accident. The preliminary investigation has begun already," added the SP.
Locals said that the ghat road between Maredumilli-Chintur is very treacherous and is damaged due to recent heavy rains, and the travellers had to travel through a narrow road in the middle of the valley. Tourist buses ply through the roads on all days.
