Alert issued as all 70 gates of Prakasam barrage are lifted

Due to heavy inflow of water from upstream, all 70 gates of Prakasam Barrage were lifted. As a precautionary measure, an alert has been sounded in Krishna and Guntur districts and officials identified and evacuated people in low-lying areas along the course of the river downstream.

As per an official statement, 4.5 cusecs of water came from Pulichintala Reservoir located upstream resulting in the opening of the gates.

"As a precautionary measure, we have lifted all the 70 gates to release water at 25,000 cusecs initially and the same was increased to 1.5 lakh cusecs by evening and it might cross 2 lakh cusecs by night and it will increase further subsequently," said Krishna delta Executive Engineer, A Swaroop Kumar.

The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority  (APSDMA) along with National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have stationed their teams in the Krishna and Guntur districts to handle any untoward situation due to heavy flow of water in Krishna river.

Several villages lying in Kurnool and Guntur districts located alongside Tungabhadra and Krishna rivers are already on flood alert with orders passed earlier this week.

Meanwhile, heavy rains are expected to lash coastal Andhra on Wednesday, with the India Meteorological Department stating that showers are expected in isolated places in the districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari and West Godavari.
